Hunter Update

Hunter is Jeff's clone in every sense of the word.

He looks like him.

He acts like him.

It's so funny to me that a toddler so little can have so many of the same mannerisms and personality traits as a parent.

Nature VS. Nurture, man.

So interesting.

One thing that makes Hunter like his dad is his stubbornness. Ha ha ha ha ha ha

If you tell Hunter to do something he will likely not do it, just because you told him to.

"Smile!" "Say hi!" "Stand up!"

All things he CAN do, just chooses not to.

Jeff is the same way.

I am positive that this is the reason Hunter isn't walking.

He won't even try standing up without support. If we try to get him to stand or walk he will just instantly fall to his knees to crawl.

It's not that he isn't physically capable, because he is.

The other day I wanted to try tricking him into standing on his own so I got my phone out, went to youtube and typed in flashing rainbow lights. I held my phone up and let him look at the lights. I saw he was distracted so I made him stand up.

He just stood there. No wobbly knees. Just standing....holding nothing....for a good ten seconds.

Then he realized he had been bamboozled (or just wanted to play) so he got down and sprint crawled away.

Such a stubborn little punk!

Words Hunter can say:

"Mama" (Mom)
"Daaahd" (Dad)
"Sis" (Sister/Grace)
"Yes" or "Yeah"
"Dis" (This)
"Ooo Ah" (Uh oh)

Words he understands and will nod or gesture, but cannot say yet:

"More"
"All done"
"Dog"
"Cat"
"Milk"
"Blanket"
"Grandma" and "Grandpa"
"Want to go?"
"Peek a boo!"

He points A LOT. He will point whenever I get him up from a nap or in the morning cause he wants to go see what's going on outside of his room.

He points at things he wants or things he sees.

He is CONSTANTLY pulling mine and Grace's hair. He will go across the room just to pull our hair if he is mad about something. It is his attention seeking thing he does. So frustrating!

Grace usually acts like she wants him to do it, just so he'll get in trouble. She will see him coming and won't move or try to get out of the way, even when she easily could.

He LOVES to be silly.

He likes to hide his face and thinks he's so funny crawling away when we call his name.

He's a little on the shy side.

He is very much an observer when we are anywhere but home.

He is not a performer. If you ask him to say hi to people or bring attention to him in a group (for example, around our families like grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins) he is very shy about it. It will be interesting to see how his personality shapes and molds itself as he gets older.

When we are at home he is comfortable and just laughs and plays nonstop. He is always smiling and acting silly when we are home.

I think he is going to be an engineer when he grows up. He is always trying to figure things out. I know that's a baby/toddler/child thing, but with him it's intensified from what you usually see. It's more than normal. He will climb and climb and climb things he shouldn't be on to figure out how something works. He's a smart little dude.

It's funny, because Grace has always been so outwardly smart. She has never had a problem expressing her smarts. She's always been a talker and will verbalize things that she understands. That girl has to talk everything out. She listens to adult conversations and will break them down with me later.

Hunter is much more inwardly smart. Like I said, he will just sit and figure things out for extended periods of time. I will see a little twinkle in his eye after he's been observing something for awhile and sometimes he'll even laugh when he realizes something that's going on. He likes trying to piece things together whether it's a toy or a puzzle. He likes putting things that go together in the same place.

Hunter loves to cuddle and be held. He likes feeling safe when I hold him.

I am proud of this little dude! Sometimes I wish he would grow up a little faster so he isn't crawling around in public all the time or that he could just talk and tell me what he wants........

But at the same time he needs to stay my baby!

He loves his family very deeply and helps us all feel special.

He's an explorer and a sweetheart. He's a comedian and a thinker. He is always brightening my day!

Love that Hunter Boy!

From The Mom to That Mom

The other day at the pumpkin patch Hunter lost his binky on the tractor ride. It flew into the dusty farmland like a dare devil going in for a crash landing.

That dang binky.

It has brought me so much relief, but really more stress than anything else.

Grace was 3 months old and didn't want anything to do with a binky. She was self soothing....totally binky-less from a very early age.

Honestly, she was probably younger than 3 months old! That's how good she was!

I thought I was a mom......nay, THE mom, who had parenting figured out.

Hooray, my baby's so awesome, PROBABLY BECAUSE OF ME, and does NOT need a binky.

Then Hunter came along and I realized Grace's awesomeness in that area of life had NOTHING TO DO WITH ME, and pretty much had everything to do with her.

On the flip side of this....

Hunter has always needed a binky.

No ifs, ands, or buts.

Really he needed a binky to fall asleep. Needed needed.

Months and months went by and the guilt was piling up higher than my laundry that needed to be folded.

(I'm really good at washing laundry.....folding though........)

He was six months old, totally binky dependent.....

Nine months old, needing his binky multiple times a day....

Happy Birthday, still needs his binky....

13 months....

14 months....

When you think you're THE mom that has stuff figured out, having a new child that does everything opposite from the last one makes things weird.

I would see so many older children with binkys though and it always calmed me down.

Oh they're Grace's age and still have a binky? Cool, I have a couple years?

Did that make the guilt go away?

No. Ha ha ha ha.

So yesterday when the binky dove into the abyss of the cabbage patch, my immediate thought was "where is the closest Walmart?"

We went to Walmart after the splendor of the courtyard games and straight to the aisle with binkys.

I looked and my heart dropped.

I know my baby.....he wasn't going to use a binky unless it looked like the one he's used his whole life.

(HIS WHOLE LIFE)

His binky has always been the green newborn kind that you get from the hospital.

Walmart sells those, but the package says "0-3 months".

I just couldn't do it! I could not buy my almost 15 month old toddler an item intended for a newborn. I pretty much cried in that baby aisle at Walmart.

I'm pathetic.

Maybe I'm THAT mom, instead of THE mom.

So I ended up buying him an age appropriate binky (6-18 months) *face palm*, ha ha ha ha. And he has completely rejected it. He will not let it anywhere near his mouth. He flails and gets mad if I try to give it to him.

That night after we bought the new binky he went to bed without a single noise. He just laid down all calm and went to sleep.

What the whole heck, kid?

Then the mom guilt of feeling like I've been coddling him and he didn't even need a binky set in.

Kids mess up your brain, people.

Ha ha ha ha.

There was no winning with the mom guilt.

The next day he struggled taking his naps. It took him 45 minutes to an hour to fall asleep for both naps. He'd cry for awhile....I'd feel really bad.....go console....

Repeat....repeat....repeat....

All the while my head was saying: "Am I messing him up by going in there? Am I messing him up by NOT going in there? He's older than Grace was when she learned to self soothe. Does he think I've left him forever? He actually knows my name. He says Mom and Mama all the time. Grace was 2 months old when she had to learn this. I am his comfort. Just kidding the binky was his comfort. I took away his comforter. Okay, no the cabbage patch took away his comforter....Ahhhh. What the heck is going on?" Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Today has been a lot better. It's been maybe 5 minutes of whimpering/not even really crying and then he's slept for 2-3 hours both naps.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring. He still loves me, so there's that.

I have learned that if nothing else kids are resilient and forgiving.

They are so good to love me even when I don't always do things the way they should be done.

It's amazing to me how different Grace and Hunter are.

They are so opposite in so many areas of life. I love it and I hate it.

One thing that I love about Hunter is how relaxed he is ALL. The. Time.

He does not like to be in the spotlight. He loves watching everyone else.

When we went to Disneyland he just hung out the entire time without a care in the world. He was so happy to just observe everything that went by.

He's not a needy baby. He will play for a half hour straight all by himself and couldn't be happier.

All of these things that I just described are the polar opposite of Grace's existence. Think of the antonym of everything I just said and that's Grace.

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Okay, for real, she's not THAT uptight, but she IS the queen of quality time. The princess of: "me me me look at me!"

Jeff says she's exactly like me and Hunter is just like him.

I'll give him that.

As much as I don't want to appear uptight....................................

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Anyways, being a mom is such a sweet thing.

I wouldn't trade it for any other kind of life. Every little growing pain and hurdle to figure out is just there to make me better.

I'm forever grateful for all the "Mama! Mom! Where are you, Mom? Mommy!? Mamamamama."s I hear everyday.

According to Snapchat

There are so many forms of social media.

Sometimes it's hard to decide what to share where or really how much to share.

I am definitely on the high end of sharing on social media as far as family goes. I'm more out there than anyone I would call family! I think I'm moderate to low compared to much of the world though, especially the millennial world, ha ha ha.

I try not to overshare.

There is one form of social media where I share a ton, though, and that is Snapchat!

Seriously what did dads, grandmas, and grandpas do before Snapchat?

They just like.....didn't get snippets of the beautiful children that they love all day everyday??

Okay, now I sound like a millennial.

Turn that off.

Here is a small taste of our life according to Snapchat.

Conference coloring

Selfies never stop.

Donde esta la biblioteca?

Pony Movie fun!

I got this snap from Jeff today. Always hard at work....

She has to display her favorite things from preschool on her pink wall. :)

When you send Dad to the store with a kid.........

Adventure all day, every day!

He was so proud of himself for climbing in the basket!

Stand out! Above the crowd!

He is the sweetest, silliest, shyest little thing. I just love love love him. I'm so excited to see how his personality blossoms as he keeps growing.

He is the biggest stinker. If he is awake before Grace (they nap at the same time) then he will sprint crawl all the way up all the stairs to get into her room and on her bed. He knows that she's in there. I've had to start putting baby gates up.

:)

Never was a girl more excited about a Halloween costume.

These babies headed off to China today! I hope they make it. I'm so nervous. I also printed a picture of my family with text saying "Merry Christmas", since these will probably get to them around Christmas. You can see I have a couple favorites who get more than just the stickers. The funny thing about those two favorites is they could not be more different. Completely, totally different personalities, work ethic, level of understanding. Kinda funny. I love the kids I teach.

Halfway Around the World

Another post about China??

Yep.

Ha ha ha ha.

I blog about things I love, and I love China!

And you should too! The Chinese people are so kind and respectful. I love them.

The thing is, the demand for teachers like me is growing like crazy.

When I started almost a year ago VIPKID had like......10,000 students? I don't even know. I'm just throwing out ball park numbers.

Now they have over 100,000 (ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND) students and it's not slowing down.

People want to learn English, man!

VIPKID is going outside of China and picking up other countries with cute kids that want to learn English too. I haven't taught any yet, but it's on the horizon and it's crazy to think about!

Because of all the growth VIPKID asks the current teachers to find new teachers all the time. It's not in a....."you must do this or it affects your job"....kind of way. It's in a "we are kinda dying over here and really need more people for these kids, HELP!" kind of way. Ha ha ha ha.

It is hard to tell people about at home jobs via social media without it sounding like a pyramid scheme.

Because let's be real..............

People post anything about any company and everyone's first thought is "what are they trying to get out of this?" Ha ha ha ha ha.

I know I think that most of the time.

VIPKID is 100% not like that though. It is totally about teachers teaching adorable kids. That's hard to convey when social media is so bogged down with people selling things.

Soooooo....I post stuff about it, but try to not be pushy.

I've had lots of sweet friends message me about it and I love when that happens, because it is such a fantastic opportunity. If you care enough to read my blog, and think it would be a good opportunity for you please ask me about it!

Alright, we'll step off the soap box of how I view social media and on to what this post is really about.....

The sweet kids I get to see everyday.

Right now it is Mid Autumn Festival in China (it's like their national holiday) so the kids have had this week off from school. The majority of families I work with have been vacationing and taking classes in hotel rooms. One of my students is in Japan right now, cause ya know....that's just what rich people do.

One part of Mid Autumn Festival tradition is to eat mooncakes. If I didn't already want to go to China enough, I think I'll go purely for the mooncakes. I have had several students this week offer to give me some if I go to their house.

If only, children, if only.

I used part of this picture as a reward this week and the kids thought it was hilarious when I'd ask what the writing on these says. It ranged from my cute favorite student who thought about it long and hard trying to translate it for me, to some just reading it at rapid speed in Chinese and laughing, because they aren't supposed to speak Chinese in our classes. Total immersion!

This was some feedback from my most faithful student, Eric. Ha ha ha ha ha. It made me laugh out loud. My class is good enough to do it while on vacation! They are too nice to me. I love Eric's mom, she always says the nicest stuff. She tries so hard to make our classes successful too. Watching how a different culture parents has just brought out my love for human development even more.

Another feedback from this week that made me laugh! I have never been complimented for my pronunciation before. It kind of cracked me up. I compliment kids on that all the time (or tell them they need work. Okay.....90% of the time it's that they need to work on it). I have never been told I have good pronunciation before though. Good thing it's my native language!

This was this morning. My student started class in a restaurant. The Wi-Fi was terrible and she kept freezing and I couldn't hear her. They decided to walk back to their hotel, which took about 10 minutes, ha ha ha ha. I pretty much just hummed and whistled to myself for those 10 minutes while I watched their glitchy video walk back to their hotel. So funny. This job is so unique!

Getting to wear my pajamas to work and fling around silly props all morning? The best.

The best part of this job, is that it doesn't get in the way of me being a stay at home mom! Hands down the beeeeeeest thing ever.

*heart eyes all day long for China*

Instead

Update, update, who loves updates?

Ha ha.

I've written maybe 3 or 4 ranting blogs recently, which have all gone unpublished.

Ranting?

What??? What could I possibly need to rant about?

Really just one thing, because everything else in my life is better than best.

What's that ONE thing???

It starts with a D and ends with a "I really hate diabetes".

That made no sense.

Yeah, anyways.....

I really hate diabetes.

But the crap surrounding that will go unpublished, cause nobody wants to read that stuff, ha ha ha.

Okay, more like I don't want people reading that stuff. :)

I'll save it for my future posterity to find in the archives of my blog and they'll be like.....

"Holy cow, our great great great great grandma was REALLY mad about her health condition!"

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I digress....

Update!

My kids are so cute.

Ugh.

It hurts how cute they are most of the time.

Hunter got his hair cut last week!

*sobs*

It's SOOO adorable! Oh my gosh, he's a tiny man.

I can't get over how handsome he is.

He is just growing and progressing in every part of life. Except for walking. He won't even try. It hasn't clicked in his brain that he totally could if he wanted to.

He's a smart little dude though. He has started getting into the stage where he actually knows what I'm asking for. I'll say: "Where's the ball?" or "Where's Grace?" and he'll point or go get whatever I'm talking about. He's been able to do this with "ball", "car", "milk", "Grace", "dog", and "book".

He loooooooves my parents dog. Loooooooves. She's kind of a big dog too! She's a beautiful golden retriever and he just squeals when he sees her. He loves petting her and letting her lick him.

He's not afraid of anything. Grace has always been my scaredy cat, so I've always kind of thought that all kids were afraid of the things she's been afraid of....but nope. There is a long list of things that he is not phased by that Grace generally still freaks out about. Dogs, vaccums, loud noises, strangers, etc. Grace has gotten lots better with many of these things though. I'll talk about that in a minute.

Hunter LOVES Lightning McQueen! I'm excited to go to Disneyland (16 MORE DAYS I'M NOT COUNTING FRAGMENT SENTENCE) and see if he reacts to Carsland! He finds anything and everything in our house that is Cars related and carries it around everywhere. He plays with toy cars constantly.

He recently learned how to turn around to go down the stairs on his own. He's known how to go down the stairs for several months, but he never could figure out how to turn around to not go head first. So every time he would want to go somewhere I would need to turn him and then he could do the rest. Last week he started just magically turning around and now he is everywhere on his own. He is SO happy with himself too. I love watching his face swell with pride when he figures something out. He is the sweetest.

He has been a little bit naughty lately in the way that he knows when he's not supposed to do something. This mostly has to do with throwing toys at things.

Grace.....me.......our TV stand....my harps....

He will throw toys at my harps, which is a big no no.

He winds up, looks at me, will say "OH!?", and then throws the toy. Such a goober. Testing limits is what babies and toddlers do. It's all part of the process, ha ha.

Hunter and Grace have the super classic sibling relationship. They love each other and laugh so much when they play. They play with each other all day long and love giving each other hugs. They also get mad at each other and don't like to share. Yesterday Hunter was cracking me up, because he would grab a toy that was by Grace and then sprint crawl as fast as he could to me, dive on my lap, turn around and burrow his back into me like "save me, Mom!". Ha ha ha ha ha. He definitely does not like Grace having toys that he wants. Aaaaaand pretty much any toy that Grace has is the toy that he wants.

We are definitely past the whole Grace gets everything, cause Hunter doesn't care or know any better stage.

Grace is very adamant about getting Hunter up from each nap or every morning when they wake up. She will cry if someone else gets him.

Crying.

That girl is SO smart. She's far above her age in so many areas, but the emotional intelligence is right where it should be developmentally. Meaning......emotions are very high and crying happens a lot! Ha ha ha ha.

She cries to get her way. She cries to get attention. (Both of which we are working on)

I am hoping that going to preschool will help with this as well as us figuring it out at home. I am hoping that being away from me and learning how to function in a classroom, with friends, with another adult besides mom and dad, will help her calm the emotions down a little bit.

I think it will. She's already loved preschool SO much! She talks about it constantly. She always wants to say all of her friends names. We'll be talking about something completely random and not preschool related and she will say: "Maybe we can ask Teacher Celeste sometime!?!?" Ha ha ha ha. I love it!

Between going to preschool and going to dance class, we have been busy! I prefer for it to be that way, though. I need to be busy. Having things to break up the day is good for us.

Something else fun that we do often is go to our local library. Grace LOVES doing this! She asks to go 3-4 times a week. We usually just go once a week, maybe twice if we don't have anything else going on.

Grace likes checking out a toy, book, and movie each time we go. The library has big bags with educational toys in them that you can check out. My kids love them. The one Grace has right now is a bunch of magnet pieces that make robots. I like getting them, because it gives them a new toy to be excited about, but we also don't need to keep it. It freshens things up toy wise.

Grace has changed quite a bit recently with how she reacts to situations.

Like I was saying above, she has always been a big scaredy cat, but recently she has gotten SO much better.

She loves going up to strangers and saying hi now. She thinks it is fun to meet and play with new kids at the playground or the library. Just last night when we went she was playing with two boys maybe a year or two older than her.

Six months ago she would have NEVER done that.

I think preschool has been really good for her that way. I'm excited to see how well she does with it this year.

She also helped me vacuum for the first time yesterday. Her whole life she has hated the vacuum. She doesn't like loud noises and no matter how many times I've told her it's okay, she would never get close to the vacuum. Yesterday I eased her into it and she helped with the hose to vacuum the stairs. She figured out that it's not scary and wanted to do the rest of the vacuuming for me, haha.

I love watching her grow up and do things better, easier, and on her own. She is so capable of so many things! I am proud of my little girl.

No blog would be complete without cute pictures!

Always with Lightning McQueen <3 p="">

We went on the train to my dad's house! It was an adventure! Ha ha ha ha ha. Public transportation with tiny children is..................a little nuts! We had more fun than anything else though. :)

He enjoys looking at trains! We can see the train out of our kitchen window and he will point it out to me all the time! Smart boy.

Grace was worried that we had to show our ticket to someone! She held on to it for a long time just in case, ha ha.

She had to bring a whole bucket of toys with her. :)

This is why I don't practice as much as I want to. Ha ha ha. He does this constantly even if I'm not playing!

Last pics before his hair cut! Oh sweet sweet boy!

Long little baby locks!

He loves putting stuff in his mouth like this. I call him a puppy and he just giggles and crawls away. He thinks he's hilarious!

My tiny dancer who also thinks she's hilarious....

And she is!

"Grace do a thumbs up!" *pointer finger every time*

She looks like she's going to break into a hip hop ensemble or something, ha ha.

Always posing :)

The other day I was loading up laundry to take downstairs and Hunter climbed into one of the baskets. He's a goof.

He does NOT like to be fed by me. He gets very impatient and prefers to feed himself!

Grace's all about me banner. She loves preschool so much!

Another week of dance. Lookin cute in her dance clothes.

My buddy
