On the edge

My cute toddler is pushing me over the edge today.

The trouble is.....

We are exactly alike.

My mom brings it up all the time how she's my tiny clone or she feels like she's stepped into a time machine every time she's around Grace, and I believe her.

I can see it for sure!

She looks like me,  she acts like me....

She's very strong willed and wants things her way.

People that don't know me well would probably be like...

"...what??? You? Strong willed and knows what you want all the time? Shy, polite you? No way."

Yes me! Ask my husband. Ask my mom. Hahaha

Growing up I was always a different person to the public eye than I was at home.

At school I was the most behaved child in the class.  Quiet,  attentive,  nice, shy,  and very very well behaved.

At home,  it's not like I was the COMPLETE opposite.....I'd say I was still nice and well mannered for the most part....

But shy and quiet??

Definitely not.

I can soooooo see Grace being exactly like me in school Vs home someday,  cause in a way she already is.

When she goes to nursery she's very well behaved. Shares with kids,  is quite easy going.....

At home she's SO hyper and silly and crazy and demands a lot.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm raising an entitled child, but I don't think I am....

I'm raising a mini version of ME and there's nothing I can do to change that.  She was born to be the way she is.

Makes you think of nature Vs nurture, huh?

I wanted to document some things she's been saying lately....

She uses the word "after" ALLLLL the time.

"Potty AFTER lunch, Mommy."

"Go store after nap, Mom."

"After breakfast, Mom, please,  Mommy?"

"Daddy home after nap."

The other day on our walk we were walking past the school by our house which has a bunch of tall light posts in the front.

I told her to run and touch the pole and she did.  I then said "look there's 4 more!"

She ran and touched the next one and then all by herself said "THREE MORE!"

I kinda did a double take.  Did my 2 year old really just use subtraction????

She kept going and said "One more!" at the next one,  which wasn't totally right,  but the principle was still there.....ish.

How is she so grown up??

Even on days when she's constantly pushing back at me....I'm still in awe of how much fun and happiness she brings to my life.

She definitely completes so many parts of my life and in our family.

She's so sweet with her brother.  She is very gentle and always kind to him.  She likes holding his hand and staring at his facial expressions.

She manipulates her dad by melting into his arms every chance she can get and tries to whimper she way into what she wants, haha. She LOVES playing with him the most out of anyone in her life.

She definitely picks on me the most,  but in the end finds the most comfort in me.  I'm her mommy through and through and she knows she needs me.

Potty Training For Real

If you follow my blog you know we've slowly been easing into potty training with Grace for awhile now.

I honestly can't remember exactly when we bought her potty seat and she started trying,  but I want to say it was like 9 months ago or so?

That seems crazy to me.

She's 2 years and 3 months old right now. And I really feel like we started letting her try around 18 months.

9 months? Holy cow!

None of that has been ACTIVE potty training,  mind you. It's all been very Gracie Goo driven. Whenever she'd ask to go we'd let her.

In the beginning she asked a lot, because it was new and exciting. In the past months she hasn't asked as much, just when she really realizes she needs to and isn't too distracted.

She's very ready and capable,  and has been for awhile now.

She's gone on the potty dozens of times no problem.

So one might ask what the issue is then,  right?? Why isn't she potty trained already?

The answer....

It's been more about getting ME on board with it.

I didn't want to do it before Baby was born,  because I didn't want her to regress after he came into our family.

And I wanted to see how she'd do with every other little thing in life once he got here.

The past maybe two weeks she's started freaking out whenever I need to change her diaper. She fights it so much.

She hates the feeling of diapers and asks to not wear them often.

I've just been so hesitant,  because she's such a strong willed,  smart girl.

I didn't want her to win at potty training....

....meaning I didn't want her to be more in charge than me.

Obviously I want her to succeed at potty training....

I want her win in that way!

But I just knew if we started off in any kind of weird way then she would latch on to that and have a hard time not making it a power struggle.

So basically I went into this thing kicking and screaming,  hahahaha.

Super great way to approach life,  right?

Haha.

SHE doesn't know I'm approaching it that way.  It's all very internal,  trust me.

But anyways, we're on day 2 and doing well.

She had one accident yesterday, but sat and was successful many many times.

I can't believe she's old enough to be potty trained.  Where has the time gone??

I made her a little chart to follow when she needs to go.

She thought it was the absolute coolest thing.  She goes up and "reads" it every time we go in to try.

The M&Ms part is her favorite. She LOVES M&Ms! Hahaha

The night before we were going to start trying we went to the store and let her pick out some underwear and M&Ms. From then on she was really excited!

We had a little mishap that night,  because she thought she got to have ALL the M&Ms on the first time,  but other than that she's done great.

Man,  why is it so hard to let your kids grow up?

I know she's still so little and most people don't potty train till closer to 3 years old....but like I said,  she's been ready for awhile.

I just need to enjoy that she's getting so big and independent, because it means she's becoming a successful human being.

It's still hard though. She's still a baby to me and probably always will be.

Love my sweet Gracie Goo.

Stay-at-home Mom

Being a stay at home is what I've always wanted to do.  Growing up being asked what I wanted to be....I'd usually try to come up with some sort of career, but would add that I'd only do that if for some reason I'm not a mom.

I look at these cute babies everyday and love watching them develop.

Being an early childhood development major in college has played a huge part in being a stay at home mom.  And I absolutely love that.

I probably think way too deeply about what's going on with my kids at any given moment,  but I love it all the same.

Yesterday we went to Krispy Kreme for pirate day and it was total chaos! SOOOO many people there. We waited in line for almost 1 1/2 hours to get our 3 dozen free donuts.

I don't really mind things like that.  A lot of people get really anxious and hate long lines,  but I usually don't have a problem with them.

Hunter slept the whole time and Grace enjoyed watching other kids run around.

She's totally a people watcher, it's funny.  She gets that from Jeff.

She only got cranky toward the end, like an hour into the wait.  I think that was because she knew we were close to getting our donuts.  The deal was you get a free dozen glazed donuts if you dress like a pirate. Grace saw the case of donuts though and saw the chocolate with sprinkles.  She started asking for that kind, so I figured I should get her one of those kind since she was being so patient.  When I gave it to her she started laughing excitedly and said "Yay!! Delicious donut!" Hahaha

She looks like such a big kid in this picture!

Hunter's pirate outfit!

This picture is funny and cute! Hunter looks like a weird little frog.

I have to take advantage of when Grace wants to take pictures! She generally just wants to be running a million miles an hour or is playing with something.

Pretty much my whole life! So much time spent snuggling this baby.

He's always pulling my hair! Ugh. I don't want to cut it though.  I've let it get longer than it ever is and I don't want to start over with that.

.....but I'm not really a ponytail everyday kind of person.  I just never have been.  I guess I'm just weird like that. I think ponytails are uncomfortable most of the time.

They are so cute :) :)

The other day Hunter was hungry and Jeff said "your boss wants you", hahaha. That pretty sums up motherhood,  but especially breastfeeding!

She thinks she's hilarious pushing my face....

So hilarious.....

Haha.

This scene was so cute to me.  Both playing with their age appropriate toys.

I found this on my phone today.  Hahahahaha. Kind of a funny,  creepy selfie. Thanks Gracie Goo.

Being a mom is the hardest,  but happiest thing. I'm grateful for this job everyday.

Sleep Reviews

I am currently at an exhausted stage where my new baby is starting to slowly sleep in longer spans.....but since my body has gotten used to being so sleep deprived I'm actually more tired with more sleep now.

Cause that makes sense.

Actually,  to me it does.  I've grown accustomed to 1-2 (or less) hours of sleep at a time,  so now 5 hour stretches of sleep is making me yawn all day.

We've had such mixed reviews on what to do with this kid sleep wise.

With Grace,  she was born big enough and healthy enough that at her 2 week well child check her doctor said "let her sleep as much as she wants at night!"

Which is why by 2 months she was sleeping through the night and has never looked back.

With Mr. Hunter Boy....

In the NICU they preached that he's so tiny he must eat every 3 hours! They always said "til he's 7 pounds you have to do this and that". It felt like everything hinged on him being 7 pounds.  And it also felt like he was never going to be 7 pounds.  Haha

Well, I'm pretty sure 7 pounds has come and gone.

He might not be much more than that,  but I know for sure he's getting bigger all the time. He's definitely gaining weight.

So since he's that "big" now I called his pediatrician's office to ask if and when we can let him sleep "as much as he wants". The nurse/medical assistant/whatever she was that I talked to seemed appalled that I called to ask that.  Hahahahahaha

Umm.....hello? I'm exhausted here....BECAUSE I've been really good and have fed my baby on the dot every 3 hours for over a month....all day and night! I could have cheated and not cared what the doctors opinion was and my baby could be losing weight and I could care less cause I'm getting wonderful sleep! Hahaha.

So yeah,  that was funny that she seemed so flabbergasted that I would ask such a thing.
Good thing she never asked for the patient's name,  so they don't know it was me asking. Hooray! Haha

In the end her answer was "well,  you definitely don't want then sleeping longer than 5 hours at a time before they are 3 months old,  because they still need a night feed."

In my mind I heard "5 hours". Sweet! That's like 3 more than I'm currently at!

I can guarantee when I go in for his 2 month appointment his pediatrician will be a lot cooler about it.

Like I said,  at Grace's 2 week appointment she was giving us the green light, so I'm sure she'll be a lot more understanding than her staff was on that phone call, haha.

Funny stuff.

I think the key is to follow the baby's lead on a lot of this stuff.

If the baby is hungry....feed the baby.

If the baby isn't gaining weight....feed the baby.

If the baby wants to sleep and is healthy otherwise....let the baby sleep.

Just my opinion.  :)

My sister in law took pictures of Hunter for us and they are so cute! Oh man,  he's a precious little kid.

He is starting to be more and more awake all the time and as a consequence to that he wants to be held all the time!

He's a sweet baby for sure. We love him.

These are a couple of my favorite pictures she took....

:)

He's the best!

Rolling Baby Talking Gracie

September is almost half way over! So crazy.

I love the months that end in -ber.

Each holiday is so fun in their own way.  And fall and winter are a nice change.  I love living where there are 4 distinct seasons.  I feel like I need that change every few months.

Our little guy is a whole month old as of yesterday!

I feel like he's our tiny newborn still,  even though it's been a whole month.

Part of that might be because he was in the hospital for a week,  on oxygen at home for another week,  and on his pulse monitor for the week after that.

He's been on constant health watch,  which means we've only been able to really enjoy him as a "normal" baby for a week or so.

Obviously he was very much enjoyed with all the chords and machines as well,  but there was a level of stress with that which I'm glad is now gone!

Some crazy news on the baby front is....he's rolled over a hand full of times already!

From birth this kid has been so strong.

He can pick his head up really well and moves like crazy.  We've left him in the bouncer unbuckled and came back into the room finding him on the floor before,  hahaha.

He now gets buckled every time.

He's not a typical tiny baby!

So when he was about 2 1/2 weeks old we laid him down on his tummy on the floor.  He immediately pushed and rolled to his back!! Jeff and I were like.......no way,  he did NOT just do that???!

I told Jeff I thought he kind of cheated, cause he was up on his elbows when I laid him down. And truly,  I think that time wasn't a legit roll,  cause he was propped up a bit.

Even still,  that showed us how strong he is and I figured he'd be an early roller just from that little experience.

A couple days later I put him on his tummy on a blanket on the floor, then went into the bathroom where I was doing Grace's hair.

I stuck my head out every couple minutes (....or seconds.... #paranoidmom) to check on him.  One of the times I looked out he was on his back!!!!

Seriously,  dude?? You wait till I'm not watching?!

That kid.  He's the cutest!

I tried to get him to do it again,  cause I knew nobody would believe me,  but by then he was too tired to try anymore.

This was when he was exactly 3 weeks old.

On his due date! :)

Later that night Jeff and I laid him down on the floor again and he did it for us!

I have the video to prove it too!

It's kind of a long video,  cause he is so little it takes him awhile.  He gets up on his side and then takes another minute to roll all the way.

I think he's only done it maybe 1 or 2 other times since. Like I said,  he's so little.....it's not like he's readily doing somersaults or something.

Other than that he doesn't have too many tricks or talents yet.

He eats and sleeps.

That's about it.

We love him though. He's the sweetest little dude.

He does really well with eating which is really nice.  Since he was born early he has to have 2 bottles of  "fortified formula" a day.  Basically the doctors say it's a bunch of good stuff that he would have gotten if would have developed all the way inside me.

I'm kinda like.....okay whatever.  He was born at 37 weeks....I'm pretty sure he's good.
But I'll listen and give him two bottles a day if I need to.

It's nice,  cause we can plan the bottles around when we might be out and about.  It's not that I'm anti breastfeeding in public,  cause I probably will someday,  but right now it's like a three ring circus when I breastfeed him.  He needs extra help and what not,  so I'm not as inconspicuous as most moms who feed their babies in public.

Yay for bottles for that reason!

He's done good with both too. A lot of people would say that doing both will make one or the other harder and they'll get lazy,  blah blah.....but he's been great to just do whatever we need.

Go baby!

As far as big sister goes.....

That girl can't catch a break! Hahaha.

She slipped and hit her mouth last night resulting in a bloody,  fat lip.

Pretty much what happened was, I was putting new bandaids on her feet and that made her remember that she needs to be sad and unable to walk......(if she's not thinking about it she walks and runs all over the place).....so when I put her on the ground from the bathroom cupboard she knelt down to crawl and her hand slipped. She then smacked her face/lip on the floor.

So she's just adding to her owies. I feel like they are neverending.

Some funny things she's been saying lately that I wanted to document are....

"Great job,  Mommy!"

She'll say this one so randomly.  She's mostly been saying it when I do things like buckle her carseat....or bring her food.

I guess it's nice to know I'm doing great things.  :)

"What are you talking boooooooooout!?"

She sings/says this many many times a day.

"I talk Baby Hunter,  Mommy."

"Careful,  Mommy.  Be careful, Mom!"

I wonder where she's heard that one? Oh yeah,  every other second she's "helping" me with the baby.

"I like that, Mom."

"Me too, Mommy."

She says that one at times that it makes no sense,  which cracks me up.

On our way home from Jeff's softball game tonight she was upset,  because he was staying to play another game.  She wanted him to come home with us so she screamed basically the whole way home....

"Daddy come home NOW,  Mommy! Mommy,  Daddy missing!!! Dad, come home! No more soccer ball,  Mommy! Daddy come home NOW!!!"

I wonder if she's a daddy's girl?

Yeah,  yeah she is.

Today at lunch,  while Jeff was home, she went up to him and said "I lay on you,  Daddy?" And just climbed up on his lap and laid her head on his shoulder.

She loves that guy! He definitely shows her how much he loves her,  which is so sweet. I think that's why she clings to him so much.

Also,  I thought I'd do an updated list of her favorite things....

Color: Pink
Animal: Dogs
Toy: Her puppy stuffed animal....or really all of her stuffed animals.  She plays with those more than any other toy. Today I counted and she has 16 stuffed animals in her crib. SIXTEEN.  She notices if I take any out too.
Food: She's getting better at eating a variety of things.  I've been surprised at how much she'll eat of some things. However....she still loves Mac n cheese the best.
Game: "Chasing".... which pretty much means we just run around and chase her.
Show: Paw Patrol

That's pretty much it for an update on us.

We're tired,  but happy.  I'm a very lucky mom to have these two cuties.

Poor Gracie Goo

Being a parent is hard!

When your kids are little it's hard to know what they need at all times. And with a toddler, especially my toddler, it's hard to know what complaints are real and what ones are for attention.

Because of these unknowns,  Grace has ended up at the doctor a couple of unnecessary times and has had some bad experiences during those times. (If you read my blog religiously you might know what I'm talking about,  haha)

Well,  lucky us,  she woke up yesterday with a badly swollen foot.

It kinda looked like there was a bug bite on the top of her foot. And when Jeff got her out of the crib she was telling him there was a bug. We have no idea if she was just saying that at random or if she actually felt a bug bite? She's kind of too little to be aware of something like that, so we aren't sure.

We gave her some benadryl....and then for the next several hours she proceeded to be very sad and grumpy and whiny.

Jeff came home for lunch and he thought her foot looked worse.

I called her pediatrician and they said to take her to an instacare.

At this point Grace was already freaking out, and then she caught wind that I was going to take her somewhere to get her foot looked at......

.....all bets were off after that.

The next two hours of my life were pretty much a constant, loud in my ear, toddler wail.

As soon as we stepped into the waiting room of the instacare it was huge crocodile tears,  clinging on to me for dear life,  and never ending screaming to make everyone around us stare in sympathy or annoyance.

Grace is a very strong willed babe.

If she gets an idea in her head it takes a lot to change her mind.

This is even the case if we do a lot to warn her beforehand. And a lot of the time warning just makes it worse!

She's also a very smart girl and remembers everything.  So she knows exactly what happens at the doctor.

And like most kids she doesn't like strangers touching her.  Even to check her temperature or the smallest, least intrusive things.

From getting set on the scale to be weighed all the way to the doctor looking her foot over she screamed and cried and flailed.

It made it hard to hear what the doctors had to say....

In the end,  we found out that she has a cut/hole in the bottom of her foot that had a sliver and since it was open it got an infection in it.

Ugh.

So on top of having a crying,  miserable child I now am feeling guilty that I let a wound like that get infected.

We left the instacare with a sucker and a tiny toy prize (which neither were earned,  but at least we left the office only crying every other minute, instead of at a steady roar).

We then went to Macys where we got her medicine,  two different kinds of bandaids, and some M&Ms.

Since we've been home yesterday and all day today she's been crawling everywhere. She won't walk at all and cries to be carried a lot. Even when she's crawling she holds her foot up and doesn't let it touch the ground.

Poor baby.  :(

She wouldn't let me get a good picture of it....so this is what we have to work with! Ha

So sad. She sits and holds it most of the day.

Another sad part of this is that she's been teething for the past couple weeks too. She'll put both of her hands in her mouth and just sit like that for awhile. And she's been complaining about it hurting and has been getting Tylenol for it for a week or so.

Kids are so funny when they are sick or in pain. They try really hard to still play just as much as they would if they were feeling normal.  And then they'll sporadically cry and complain,  haha.

Well,  hopefully we can get this over with fast and get in better moods soon.

If anyone needs us we'll be watching Tangled, playing with a baby....

This baby

...eating Puppy Fruit Snacks, and trying to avoid watching Paw Patrol on repeat.

Snapchatting My Life Away

What our life has looked like through Snapchat lately.....

She's been dancing and singing so much more lately.  She has been surprising me with words she knows in songs.

90 minute carseat test in order to get off the oxygen. I was so stressed out.  Ugh.  Didn't help that he kept crying periodically and I couldn't get him out to soothe him.

I'm pretty sure this is the sweetest video of all time.

This kid has had lots of doctors appointments! And not very fun ones either.  :(

She's always concerned about his binky. She tries really hard to help him with it.

This picture. Hahaha. Grace almost always needs to sit by me...or really on me....when I'm feeding Hunter.  "I sit there, Mommy! I sit there!!!"

She's tried to be so nice about her brother,  but I can tell when she doesn't like how much attention he's getting. It's like she's conflicted,  cause she LOVES him so much,  but gets annoyed too, haha. Oh to be a toddler.

Grace's thoughts: Why does this baby have to be fed so much!?

Love these little sweet things!
